چکیده

Packet switched technology has been demonstrated attractive for use in cellular radio systems with short propagation delay, not only for data but also for voice. In fact, packet voice can eeciently exploit speech on-oo activity to improve bandwidth use over TDMA. Such an approach has been rst suggested in 1], where Packet Reservation Multiple Access, an adaptation to the cellular environment of the Reservation ALOHA protocol, has been introduced. However, R-ALOHA is based on a xed frame scheme. For this reason, it cannot thoroughly exploit the natural advantages implied by the very short propagation delay encountered in microcellular systems, such as, for instance, the immediate retrans-mission of packets lost because of the interference noise from adjacent cells. In this paper, we present the Centralized PRMA, a natural enhancement of PRMA, that assigns to the base station a central role in scheduling the transmissions of terminals. As a consequence, packet retransmissions and the diier-ent delay constraints that emerge from voice and data integration, can easily be dealt with. We also propose a diierent reservation channel that avoids the bottleneck eeect present in PRMA. Preliminary simulation results show a sensible gain, with respect to PRMA, in the maximum number of voice channels that can be accommodated and indicate the optimality of the approach.

Performance Evaluation of a Packet Reservation Media Access (PRMA) Scheme for Broadband Fixed Wireless Access

This paper introduces a packet reservation based MAC layer for broadband fixed wireless access communications. The performance of a reservation based MAC scheme is compared with the performances of Pure-ALOHA and Slotted-ALOHA MAC schemes. A simulation using OPNET Modeler is performed to compare the performance of these MAC schemes in terms of channel throughput and average packet delay.

Recently, a packet reservation multiple access (PRMA) protocol was proposed for wireless communications. It can improve the system capacity by extracting the active terminals while they are in silent state. D. J. Goodman has analyzed the system by using the equilibrium point analysis (EPA). However, this method possibly generates multiple stable equilibrium points in high load condition. The ex...

Computer networks can be built using either wired or wireless technology. Although wired network has been the traditional choice, wireless technologies are becoming more popular. One of the most challenges is to have an existing wired network to which a wireless network extension could be added. Specifically the challenge is to connect a group of wireless networks through a wired backbone. The ...
